Explore Croatia by Boat, Bike and Foot

Why Active Cruises in Croatia Are Pedalling Paradise

If you’re stuck at work, feeling bogged down by Groundhog Day, or just craving some fun in the sun, picture this… You’re cruising along an island road on an e-bike. It’s the first time you’ve ‘gone electric’ and although it feels pretty effortless, your heart’s pumping for all the right reasons.

To the left are olive groves laden with ripe fruit. You can smell fragrant fresh pine, and the gentle wind is cooling despite the warm rays above. On the other side of the road lies the seemingly endless Adriatic Sea, punctuated here and there with glimpses of nearby island shorelines.

Further down lies a stunning white-stone village, nestled along an inlet. Your boat is moored down there, where you and your cycling buddies are headed for a seaside al-fresco dinner. You’re wondering if you’ll order grilled chicken or maybe the fresh catch of the day, washed down by a drop of something locally crafted on the island. Either way, you’re definitely finishing with a well-deserved dessert!

This isn’t a fantasy. It’s a slice of paradise holiday adventure when you choose a Cycle Cruise Croatia experience. This is living – find out more below!

Reasons to Choose a Croatia Cycle Cruise – Prepare to Get Excited!

Many have embraced the concept of active holidays in Croatia. Indeed, Cruise Croatia has seen a huge rise in people looking for add-on adventures that leave them invigorated rather than exhausted. So what’s the attraction of cycling and walking cruises? Our past holiday goers share many reasons, including:

  • You’re travelling on a floating hotel. There’s no need to cycle, unpack, sleep, pack, and cycle again – your fabulous Croatia cruise ship faithfully awaits your daily return.
  • Combining sea and land is the ultimate holiday adventure, especially in Europe, where both are equally spectacular.
  • The Dalmatian Coast offers some incredibly scenic roads with smooth bitumen surfaces or well-paved gravel.
  • It’s a chance to explore areas that might otherwise be inaccessible.
  • ‘Slow’ travel offers many advantages—a relaxing pace, daily gentle exercise, an opportunity to better interact ‘impromptu’, and an experience of local culture.
  • Cycling or walking enables you to ‘get into’ a landscape rather than witness it as a passer-by in a vehicle.
  • You can indulge in delicious Croatian food and wine without returning to Australia carrying extra weight (and you’re not referring to your luggage!).

Tips for Booking and Planning a Sail Croatia Cycle Cruise

  • This is an active holiday, so choose the time of year and season that suits you best for physical activity.
  • If you’re new to cycling, ideally, get some kilometres under your belt before you leave home in preparation. You’ll be on a quality e-bike that makes cycling a dream, but it just helps your body adjust if you already have a bit of a cycling base.
  • Pack smart – ideally include some padded cycling shorts, breathable jerseys, a cap and sunglasses that offer sun protection.
  • Make sure your travel insurance covers bike riding – most do, but you want to be sure.

Frequently Asked Questions About Active Cruises in Croatia

While all three Croatia cruises and bike tours share similar itineraries, the boat accommodation sets them apart. As the name suggests, our Bike Split South PLUS Cruise is a first-class cruise, Bike Split South Cruise is a deluxe cruise, and Bike Split South Traditional Cruise Holiday is a traditional wooden ship cruise.

It depends on the trip you select, but most days will involve 20 to 30 km of riding, which will be spread out so it feels a lot less. On an e-bike, this will be fairly easy going! Elevation can vary from around 100 to 400 metres. Again, an e-bike enables you to make this as easy or challenging as you want.

We recommend at least average fitness for our active holidays. Whilst these are far from physically gruelling (they are intended to prioritise pleasure over exertion), by their very nature they encourage a more active rather than sedentary day. That said, there are many enjoyable breaks, stops for meals, and time to simply soak up a slower way of life!

Yes, we will provide the ebike and helmet. We recommend you pack comfortable runners, cycling attire, sunglasses and a hat you can wear under your helmet.
